Bridal Boudoir Hair & Makeup

Some time ago, I received an inquiry from a lovely bride-to-be by the name of Brooke. After months of correspondence, we finally met for the first time at her bridal trial and let me tell you, it was a match made in heaven! Brooke and I corresponded for months, leading up to her wedding events, during which she shared what was important to her in terms of her hair and makeup; she gave me the basic guidelines for her bridal look and then granted me the creative freedom to run with it.

As cliché or cheesy as this may sound, the most important thing for me when working with a bridal client is to truly understand what the bride envisions and to really bring that look to life. I definitely put the pressure on myself with this because a wedding is one of those ‘once in a lifetime moments’ that you hope to cherish and remember fondly for the rest of your life.

One of the stunning images from Brooke’s boudoir shoot, shot by Warren McCormack Photography, was featured in Shutter Magazine, one of the photography industry’s leading publications, sold at Barnes & Noble.

Here are my own snaps of Brooke’s boudoir and bridal portrait look, starting with her Before & After. For her makeup, we went with a very soft and romantic look, enhancing her natural beauty. I did custom lashes for her.

Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Cream Lip Protectant

With a recent trip back home to Canada, among the items I always have on hand is a trusty lip balm. I am from Alberta, Canada which is one of the driest places I've ever lived and because of this, despite my best efforts to keep my skin as soft as a baby's bottom, reality is such that I am always scaly and chapped. Especially during the winter, my skin gets so dry that within a day of landing on home turf, I always get 'The Joker smile' which is just not a good look to have.

One of my favorite lip products is the Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Cream Lip Protectant.

I have been using this balm for years now and it's one that I always recommend to my clients, ladies and gents alike. For brides in particular, I always tell them to make sure they moisturize their lips religiously in the months leading up to their wedding day as lipstick just does not sit well on chapped lips. This should be a staple for every single human (and non-human!...more on this below) as it really is just an incredible product.

The Eight Hour line was introduced to me by someone who worked for Elizabeth Arden. She had said that Elizabeth Arden developed the Eight Hour formula after her stable caught fire and many of her horses were badly burnt. She used it to treat and heal the horses' burns and later introduced the formula to the masses in her Eight Hour line. While I really love this story, I looked it up to verify its accuracy and the only credible information I found was that she did indeed use Eight Hour Cream on her horses' legs and hooves but nothing on the fire being the reason that she developed the line.

The first product I tried from the Eight Hour family was the cream itself. I really do like and continue to use it but the lip protectant is definitely what I use more regularly. It has a soft, balm-like texture.

What I love about this product is that you do not need to reapply it constantly. A little goes a long way and it lasts for hours. It treats, soothes and heals chapped lips instead of just that instant gratification you get with many lip balms. It does have a slight sheen to it but nothing too glossy-glossy.

Don't expect it to smell like vanilla-cookies-sunshine-and-rainbows like many other lip balms. This product does have a bit of a medicinal scent to it but truthfully, you get used to it and this really does not bother me.

I do want to mention that I believe these lip protectant 'tins' are available only during the Christmas season as this is when I have been able to find them from Elizabeth Arden counters but...

...you can purchase the balm year round in a small jar, stick or tube.
